The Birds

‘The Birds’ is a play by Aristophanes which tells the story of two Athenians who are trying to create a new kingdom in between Earth and The Heavens. Within the play there are a variety of different characters such as birds, humans and Gods and this means there is plenty of opportunity for creative designs.

We were asked to select our three favourite characters and do some initial research to give us an idea of what designs we could do; in particular looking at Greek period costume, pottery, tapestry, Renaissance costume and also human and bird anatomy. This led to many ideas which I have documented in my sketchbook. My three selected characters were Procne, The Owl and Posidon.

Once we had done this, we then had to select our favourite design from the three, and create 2D colour drawings alongside a 3D model mannequin. Here is my design for Procne, accompanied by two other designs from fellow course members.

During skills week we were asked to design and create a waistcoat, fitted either to ourselves or to a friend. This involved a variety of processes such as measuring, creating a basic block, pattern cutting, fitting, tacking and sewing. Over the course of the week I learnt a wide range of new skills, particularly new to me as I have no previous experience in textiles, fashion or costume.

We were also inducted on different machinery within the costume workshop which all came in very handy throughout the week, and were also taught how to hand stitch which is always a useful skill to have.

Here are some images from Skills Week.
